Our roots are said to be from the sea, yet we know very little about it. As inhabitants of a long mountainous archipelago, the Japanese people have developed a deep relationship with sea vegetables over sixteen thousand years.

Seaweed is used across all three pillars of Japanese living: textiles, food, home.

This is a documentation exercise to better understand how a single material can quietly service an entire country’s livelihood and cultural backbone.

人類のルーツは海にあると言われていますが、海のことはあまり知られていません。陸の研究が進んでいる中、海中の研究はまだまだ遅れているそうです。そこで、島国の住民として、もっと知りたい。先ずは、ずっと仲良くさせていただいてきた海藻たちから。今では、海外でも注目を浴びる”seaweed”は、パンに練り込んだり、スキンケアの成分として使われている。でも、世界が欲しているのは最先端で画期的な使用方法ではなく、日本の古き良き知恵袋です。衣食住の全てに使われてきた”kaiso”のあれこれをシェアリングしたい。
